Promoting Smart Drinking Water Management in South Asian Cities -Process Specialist (International)

The project was to complete conceptual and preliminary design of two wastewater treatment plants of 30 and 60 MLD each including the sludge management. The steps to complete were:

  • Review the existing data and information in the feasibility study done in 2015/16 and conduct further survey as required;
  • Work with wastewater treatment plant specialist, co-treatment specialist and sewer network specialist to determine the preferred design options of the treatment plants;
  • Considering the wastewater data, identify the design outputs based on which treatment system will be designed;
  • Prepare the process design and operational cost models;
  • Develop the treatment process/mechanism with all the components;
  • Prepare the detailed project reports (including scoping, outline design, cost estimate, timeframe etc.);
  • Finalize the conceptual design and outputs criteria required for DBO package;
  • Assist in preparation of DBO bid documents;
  • Assist in preparation of IEE, EIA and resettlement plan as appropriate;
  • Assist in bidding process (invitations, evaluation & award); and
  • Assist ADB in preparing all the processing documents for Board approval.
Methodology for capturing environmental, social and economic implications of industrial symbiosis in Kwinana industrial area

This project was funded by the Australia Research Council with support from Industries in the Kwinana Industrial Area. “The Six Capitals Model” (SCM) was developed to assess sustainability implications of industrial symbiosis of projects in Kwinana Industrial Area.

Methodology used in this research was review and evaluate the experiences of other industrial areas around the Europe and Australia by visiting and interviewing many of the major industries and their managers, regulatory bodies, academics and the community groups of these places. This model then applied to Water Recycling plant (KWRP) in Kwinana to assess sustainability of this project.

SCM became a better tool to assess the integrated benefits of Industrial Symbiosis (IS) between the symbiosis partners of the project. It has the capacity to assess the values of ecosystem capital created due to implementation of the project in addition to the natural capital. The SCM can identify the social benefits such as human and community capital value generated out of this project. It also values the manufactured capital separately from financial capital. It therefore provides an opportunity to identify the value generated to both the community and the participating companies.

The SCM model allows an integration of quantitative and qualitative data to be analysed. One of the main advantages of this method is that with the right indicators, the intangible values of the IS process can also be measured. The results of this model showed that there are broader benefits of symbiosis, not only from operation of the IS projects, but also from the relationship developed during symbiosis.
